A day of prep for New Year's and for neolefty's arrival. Besides the bottle of Maker's Mark for the NaNoWriMo victory, he's got me a choice of shirts from Kweejibo. I've recommended that place to millionaires and paupers alike (though the pauper will need to save a lot longer; shirts are typicall $80 plus). They've got good shit if you're even in San Francisco. That's the only place that allows me to even think about keeping up with incognegro in the cool clothes department.

Back to food prep.

What a day: show up at 10 am, procrastinate the only thing I have to do and go to lunch noon (for two hours, no less), come back and finish off the procrastinated item and then leave before 3. This lunch was no way near as fun as yesterday, but you still have to love holiday season around the office. I definitely need to spare vacation days and take advantage of the lack of anything going on next year.

Well, I'm out of here.

Wednesday, December 29, 2004

I mentioned neolefty's friend was in that crazy tsunami, well there's an interview with his girlfriend's mom.

Tuesday, December 28, 2004

I was getting ready to leave and the phone rang. It was my boss saying it was pretty quiet around the office and that I could head out. In the six months I've been here, I had never realized that someone told me when I could go. And I assumed I set my own schedule based upon the work I had completed. This place is funny. At least I'm glad I didn't leave ten minutes ago.

neolefty has a friend vacationing in Thailand. Thailand of the 8.9 earthquake fame. He was staying in a bungalow near the ocean and got sucked out to sea. An excerpt from his email to everyone:

"Just before I was rescued I found a Thai girl floating in the ocean holding on to something plastic or wooden--the sea was littered with debri like a carpet--and managed to find a sea kayak in the debris and help her in. Then I saw that she had a nail sticking out of her neck--it wasn't bleeding and I told her not to remove it.

"we lost everything. I'm wearing a tattered swimsuit under the hospital gown.... I have a shirt that an italian man gave me, and 50 euros, and two packs of cigarettes."

I mentioned deviled eggs yesterday and what did I get today for a snack? Deviled eggs. My mom is the best!

Strange thing about being here in Florida: everyone seems to think I need a haircut. I think I look fine. Maybe they don't like the longhairs down here.

Hey JMVC, mystery solved: I was in Florida for Thanksgiving last year. You know how I found that out? I looked in the archives.

One accomplishment of this trip, I've got my hotmail unread emails from 180 to zero. It's a miracle!

So it rained on and off all day yesterday, was humid and overcast the day before that, and today the wind is blowing from the west at 30 - 40 mph. You can look out at the ocean and think it's calm, but that's just because the wind is blowing from the wrong way. The shitty weather continues to follow me.

I wonder what Bubba thinks of his boy Nick Saban heading to run the show down in Miami? In fact, where the hell is Bubba?

My brother played some sort of shell game with me and I went from going to see The Aviator to babysitting my niece. I think I ended up with the better end of the bargain (especially since my brother ended going to see Meet the Fockers), and I now have plenty of things to embarass my niece when she grows up. Now off to dinner and leg o' lamb.

What's the deal with these Care Bears? My niece just got five or six for Christmas and there are like seventeen laying around the house. These things sucked when I was growing up and haven't gotten any less annoying. I certainly hope she's not using my gift to get any more.

Man, I could really do without this Christmas thing. Maybe it's because my brother, his wife, and daughter are down at my folks' place and I'm on the couch. If it wasn't for my niece waking me up at 8 am, I could've slept all day (and typically do). Fortunately she's cute and can be forgiven such indiscretion. And you should have saw her face when she opened up that envelope with Toys 'R' Us gift card in it.

As crazy as it might seem to my friends, I hadn't seen the Episode III trailer until today (Yes, being at my folks place has left me a lot of time on my hands). No matter, no matter how good the movie is it can never recover the stink that Lucas has left on a once proud franchise.

Man, this place is blown out. Even a couple months afterwards you can see roofs patched with blue tarps, plywood on windows, and lots of missing folliage.

Yo! picked me up from the airport and we proceeded to hit a bunch of the bars in the West Palm area. That after two first class flights and some food/drinks at Pappadeaux. Though I had a good time with Yo! and am reminded of what a shit hole South Florida is, especially to go out in. I crashed over here and am heading up to my folks place in a few minutes. First chance to see the hurricane(s) damage!

I called on the way to the airport and the flight was delayed about an hour so breezed to the airport. When I go there, the place was a zoo, especially the Continental counter. The line contained at least a few hundred people. Good thing I'm no idiot and had already checked in online and I just walked to security then to the plane. Thankfully I didn't have any bags to check. Then to make things even better, I got upgraded to first class and the flight left earlier than expected. Now I've got to find that Pappadeaux here in Houston's airport!

Apparently my flight is at 3:58, not at 4:52 like I thought so I need to I've got to get out of here sooner than I thought. And I need to find some food because I'm starving. The Salt Lick at the airport isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

Instead of watching crappy TV I thought I'd pop in one of the numerous DVDs that I own (many of which I've never opened or seen). I decided To Live in Die in L.A. would suit my purposes. The only thing of note in that bad movie is the coincidence of the first date mentioned (in the movie) being Dec. 20. Not much encouraging in that. So I watched a crappy movie instead of crappy TV, but this is one less unopened, unwatched DVD in my colletion.

I ran some errands at lunch and stopped for a little Sonic on the way back. I've been eating real shitty that past couple weeks, but a quick New Year's resolution will take care of that.

Anyway, my bill came out to be $5.92 so I handed the girl $21.17. The people at Sonic don't have registers, so I can sort of understand her reply of "Why did you give me that?" Maybe I just appreciate her honesty. I explain how I did that to get $5.25 back so she hands over the appropriate amount of change. Not one minute later she comes back and says I owe her back a dollar. She was quickly dismissed, but it goes to show you the great math skills of today's children.

Went to HEB after work and remembered on my way out that I had my dream cooler filled with beer still in the trunk. What better way is there to end a long day at the office than a luke warm Bud Light while driving home?

The Griddler made it into the office for panini day. That thing is the best investment I've made in a long time. If I don't get fired, that will have something to do with it.

I got to miss the boring parts of the games today to take Chilly to the airport. He's on his way to Guatemala to get married. Well, married again. His wife wants to have a formal wedding down there (obviously she's from there). And not only is tomorrow his birthday, but his anniversary. And when is getting remarried? On New Year's day. That'll make remember dates a bit easier.

Amazing how much stuff you can get done when you wake up at 8:30 am on a Saturday. I've had breakfast tacos at Tamale House, been to two Targets, raked the backyard, turned the pool from black green to nearly moss green, and picked up my suede jacket (bring on the cold weather!). I should stay home on Fridays more often.

Wednesday, December 15, 2004

I dropped off my suede jacket a few days ago to be repaired (it had a nice rip at the collar from some random stupidity years ago). The woman said it'd be done on Thursday and I gave her my number to call me so I'd know how much cash to bring. Well, she called a few minutes ago and said it'd be twenty five dollars plus tax. I'm fine with the amount, but it still will need a few more days. Now I'll have to wait until next week. Just when I had my hopes up for wearing suede.

I've figured out a way to make some money off of Pedro Matirnez's baseball career. I've made a bet with neolefty that Pete won't be making 100 starts over the course of his new contract with the Mets. One hundred smackers will be coming my way come some time in 2008! Or maybe sooner.

I had to pass this Museum Replica site along to S. Money earlier today. If he wasn't married, I'd see a lot of money getting spent on his end. Maybe I'll make one of the rooms in the estate into an armory...

This wacked out project I've been on seems to be grinding to a halt. This is not only due to typical bureaucratic in-fighting, but we're coupling that with nobody wanting to make any decisions. What I love is to have meetings several hours every day just to continue the spinning of wheels. I love it because it is so helpful! I think I'm done with this one for the rest of the year.

My fantasy football team was down nearly 50 points going into Monday Night Football action and was without hope. Well, I would have been if Drew Bennett and Larry Johnson weren't on my team. I ended up losing by only nine points, but I gave it the ol' college try. All my hopes for an improbable playoff appearance were officially dashed, but they can't take back the playoff trophy from last year.

Many missteps, wrong purchases later, and interuptions by the pool man (in a non-porn way), but the chowder is done! Good stuff, though I think there's enough here for a dozen people. I hope this stuff defrosts gracefully. JMVC is coming over so hopefully he's really hungry.

Even in late fall with chowder cooking, I still have issues with my pool. The pool guy just left and I had the pump replaced for my Polaris, so the pool is ready for anyone wanting to take a 50° swim. Oh, and the pool guy said he's seen more leaves in my pool than any pool he's ever seen. And the guy's been doing this sort of thing for nearly 30 years. I am most impressive with this house stuff.

Shit, this recipe calls for mushrooms. Back to the store.

OK, I'm making this damn seafood chowder today. This will take some effort, but in a couple hours I'll have chowder enough for at least a couple folks. Forty bucks of shopping yesterday at Central Market won't go to waste. Though I need to pick up a couple things at the plain ol' HEB before I can start.

Saturday, December 11, 2004

I just got back from a pretty damn boring night. One highlight, though, as I was able to relive a fond memory from my youth: driving around with a cooler full of beer. America, what a country.

I can't believe the week is about over. Where does the time go? Even faster considering I need to meet some people down at Gingerman to grab beers.

Tuesday, December 07, 2004

I was trying to find an old post mention Jager's visit to the ATX, but couldn't. I probably didn't try hard enough, but that's another story. I did find this unusual site, though: death metal video

Scroll down and you'll see a familiar site linked. But I don't think he read my linking policy.

Well, the book from November has an official reviewer. The devil himself, Jager, is spending some time cutting and chopping through that piece of shit. I ran spell check, and just barely, so he's got his work cut out for him. For this I might actually take a shot of that infernal bottle he left at my house. Though I doubt it. Could luck!

I know I've been shopping too much if I'm having dreams about going to Crate & Barrell and having personal shoppers there recommended things for me. And it started off with me at the Gap spending tons of money. Old Navy I could understand, but the Gap?

disclaimer: I know the Gap and Old Navy are owned by the same company, but I still don't like the Gap. And this is way before Sarah Jessica Parker (aka Dee Snider) became their spokesman.

It may be too late, but my fantasy football team's on a win streak. Three in a row now and I put up a hundred with two of my players (Mike Vick and Randy Moss) in the negative. Good work, team!

I came home from a class and my place was like an oven. Apparently, the weekend default temperatures were in the low 80s. So much for putting the heat on in my place. Those crazy thermostats and their default temps.

Friday, December 03, 2004

I've had a long, long week so I decided to go out for some beers last night. First stop was B Sides and I ran into somebody who shares my first name. The guy's having a sangria party on the 11th and invited me along. He lives right by Chilly, so I'll have a convenient place to crash once I get too loaded.

After B Sides, we headed to Maggie Mae's where there was a gathering of the UT MBA Program. Holy shit, that was weird. You ever see a group of mba's before? Only place you'll find more white people is at a KKK rally. I commented on some guy's jacket and he dropped that he bought in London. Punk kids today. No respect.

Thursday, December 02, 2004

Four days in a row in the office past 7 pm, that's no good. At least Monday I was added some more detail to the story, but the rest has been work. God forsaken work.

Wednesday, December 01, 2004

I've been avoiding the heat in my place, becauase, well I'm from up north and don't need no stinkin' heat. I woke up and the internal temperature of my house was 55° and my opinion changed. I guess I'll put it around 60°.
