visiting carl's jr

A work trip to San Antonio gave me time to sneak out for a glorious visit to Carl's Jr. They still appear to be pretty rare down here because I had to drive 15 minutes to find this one. Since they are relatively close by now, I almost decided against the Ranch Chicken. In the end, I went with the old faithful but I can't promise that will be the case next time. The burgers look pretty darn tasty! And the fried zucchini will have to tried, too.

And with that, I'm out of here. Time to head back to Austin.

austin: live music and dead zombies

We've got some trouble in Austin and it ain't just the cold temperatures! Is it the end of the world? Do we need to save ourselves behind lock doors? Or maybe some jackass has too much time on their hands. Maybe they are trying to surpass putting cones in my street.

Some crazy person has blocked off my street with magical cones.

jebus this is terrible

Wow, this story about Miss Brazil is horrible. This is an absolutely disgusting story. What the hell kind of misdiagnosis can cause amputations?

obama!

Our newest President has arrived at the saucer. If the guy didn't have enough pressure on him, now he's got to live up to having a plate on the wall. Now I need to find the one for Dubya.

dealt

The first card game at my place has finished. I think I'll have to adjust the level of food made because I had a bit too much. There was enough sandwiches, but too much dip. And I held the the Pringles in reserve so I got that going for me.

hotel motel...

The inauguration man has arrived in D.C. and is holed up in some swanky pad, the Artists Inn Residence. He's got the Salvador Dali suite through tomorrow night. I'll have to post some of his pics later one.

brunch at sagra

I just got back from a great brunch at Sagra Trattoria. I had the polenta with fried eggs but the key was the 75¢ mimosas and bellinis. Who can turn those down? I chose the bellinis and drank like 10. And the food was great. I had the fried eggs with polenta, but there were plenty of items on the menu for another time.

mork from ork

So my brother left this morning early, so my sleep was a bit off, but I did have two dreams I remembered. In one I was going out with a girl that was in remake of Mork and Mindy. The roles were reversed and the chick was Mork. The other remembered was from Lost; the group was escaping on a big raft (almost like something out of Gilligan's Island) when some group came by and they tossed a molotov cocktail into it. They they went to commercial. Convenient!

gabe kaplan is the man!

This is a classic clip from the greatness that is Battle of the Network Stars. It takes a couple minutes before the real action starts, but it is filled with great un-PC lines and arrogant bastards (well, one bastard).

inauguration

neolefty is leaving on Sunday for Washington D.C. for next week's inauguration and he stumbled upon this bar that rewards perfect attendance. This Tombs place must be the Flying Saucer equivalent in our nation's capitol D.C.

careful where you lay your head

I'm sure I haven't mentioned my ambivalence towards Ambien. I don't know if its because the site's been down for months or that I usually don't opine about pharmaceuticals. Either way, I've heard too many stories from people I know about the stuff. Now neolefty's send me this article about a guy in Wisconsin ending up dead. I know Yo! has had issues with the shit and I've always bitched at him about it, but at least he's not (yet) dead from using it.

And then I got ANOTHER article about stupidity while sleeping. Sleep emailing? What the hell.

filet mignons

My brother picked up a whole beef tenderloin which meant only one thing: lots of filets I figured I'd make them with some mushroom along with a bearnaise sauce. The mushrooms turned more into a sauce, but they were damn good.

And the final product, though the battery died before I could get a shot of the baked potato.

moved in

The office has been settled. I put up some pics last month, but now I've put pretty much everything into the office. Though it isn't cleaned up (nor likely will it ever), it is as it will be for a while. The first picture is looking into the office with the second the view standing over my desk.

I did most of this yesterday afternoon, conveniently before my brother showed up. Some office optimization is needed, but this is good for a bit.

myron rolle

My man from Florida State, Myron Rolle, is choosing Oxford over the millions from the NFL. Well, at least for a year. I hope he offsets any of that nonsense that FSU isn't a real school and doesn't care about its education (that might be too much pressure for the kid). Also, I was just reading this SI article about him just yesterday.

And speaking of reading, I had a post about him committing to FSU back in February 2006. And I forgot to boo C.J. Spiller.

Ichiban has convinced me to join a weekly pool league. If it wasn't confirmed before (or with my recurring card game), I am an indeed a bachelor. I might even be becoming more firmly entrenched.

ranch crispy!

In the process of cleaning up some old posts/updating pictures I found an old one regarding Carl's Jr. Turns out there's a newer one in Austin. Well, south Austin but that's still closer than San Antonio. I've had a love for the Ranch Crispy for years (though they have varied it slightly over time). During the dark days of dmt, I actually made it to the location in San Antonio, but to have a location within 15 miles?! Exciting times for sure! I might even contemplate moving to the dirty, dirty south. Now I just need to find a time to go. Soon, it has to be.

movies to death

A nice day of sleeping off the fun of the Saucer's 1st Anniversary party followed playoff football and then a nap readied me for countless hours of television. emjey had recommended Sweeney Todd but just could not get through the first 5 or 10 minutes.

I then turned my attention to watching In Bruges. I thought I read 'dark comedy' somewhere and if 'dark' means I'm left depressed then it hit the mark. Killing Bruge off the dvr left me time to watch the first hour of 24 (I will leave judgment of that for another day...) uninterupted by pesky commercials.

All the sleep left me sleepless so I then took on Syriana. Now if one is trying to get something uplifting after a dark comedy, looking into the light of Syriana isn't the way to go. I wouldn't say it was bad, but just very depressing. I think I'll finally head to bed.

deal 'em

I was out with Aces and emjey last night and I ended up pledging to hold a semi-recurring card game at my place. I don't know how they got me to do that, but I don't think its a totally horrible idea.

one brick at a time

So I'm slowly but surely recreating the site. There's a shit load of missing pictures out there. I don't think I'll go back and put pictures everywhere, but where it makes sense I will. Labeling content is definitely something I'm working on, but there are so many worthless old posts that I'll have a tough time labeling everything.

And neolefty was asking me about site hits a couple days ago and I had no hits. So while digging through the old posts, it hit me that I had to put one out about this. I had to put some tracking code within my template so I went ahead and did that. Now I've got a couple new links with bad/old html. The links page is what I was trying to get working with blogger but the overheard page is just dead html.

solace for who?

I snuck out of work (work being my living room) to go see Quantum of Solace before it headed out of the theater. With only one showing I assumed this was my last chance so I took it. As it was before 5, the show was considered a matinée. Funny when I was told it was seven bucks. Then add in a small frozen coke and I'm into the James Bond for twelve dollars. Hell, if I had waited for six months I could have bought it for about that price.

As for the movie, I liked it. It was not nearly as good as the last one, but I am growing used to the gritty James Bond. Small things like Bond going walking through an complex with laundry hanging would just never happen in the older Bond films. The Bourne-esque camera shots do get a bit to claustrophobic but they kept the action coming and limited excessive dialogue. I could have done without the slight references to current world dilemnas and the Bond girls should've been hotter, but it definitely killed some time. Maybe not worth twelve bucks, but not all that bad.

war by chuck

Another movie up, another down. I killed Charlie Wilson's War last night. I know there was the typical Hollywood propaganda tossed in there and I know Charlie Wilson didn't single-handedly defeat the Communists (was Reagan's name even mentioned even once?) but it gave a was a great snapshot of how it was in the Cold War in the 80s. Plus, I can't recall Tom Hanks being bad in any movie so there was little chance of this movie stinking. Add in a bunch of (smart) hotties, Philip Seymour Hoffman and you have a winner.

Now I need a nap. I got up for a 7:30 am call and there isn't anything on the docket until 3 pm.

gassed!

Up before the 8 am for the first time in ages not feeling horribly sleep deprived. Maybe I'd rather be up than in the hazmat suit filled world that I woke up from. From where my memory kicks in, I was the only person not in a suit and was wondering why my eyes were burning when I glimpsed everyone else suited up. And nobody offered to help me out, though they were all concerned that my eyes were all red (though I do recall someone saying I should take out my contacts). Such is life in a chemical wasteland.

And I'm up early so I can go to the dentist and then go give blood (cue Pete Townshend music). And since the blood-giving is at the office, I'll actually go in for the first time in what seems to be weeks.

good night

I figure I have pretty much every movie channel imaginable that I might as well start taping movies I have wanted to tape. First up was Good Night, and Good Luck. This movie about Edward R. Murrow's battle with red hater (and chaser) Joe McCarthy was a good look at television in the 1950's and the battles that CBS had against the government, but I didn't think it all came together. David Strathairn's portrayal of Murrow was great (and who can't like somebody smoking constantly on tv!) but I didn't really feel like deserved my empathy. Maybe if they had had somebody portray McCarthy so he'd seem like more of an asshole? I had always thought this showdown was the important part in getting McCarthy's censure but this movie makes me think it it was just a small bit. Though I appreciate it being in black and white and short (roughly an hour and a half), I'd say it is just blah overall.

stornoway, where real christmas' occur

I just got off the phone with Yo! I got the recap of his New Year's and Christmas trips. New Year's seemed boring (for me, at least) in comparison to his trip to Stornoway for Christmas. The friend he's staying with in Scotland is originally from there and he accompanied her home for Christmas. It is city located on the Isle of Lewis off the west coast of northern Scotland. He had a nice flight in a plane that would only accommodate 16 people. But the real shocker was that at the parties and bar he'd go to, he'd be one of the soberer ones.

Oh, some people would meet him, realize he's an American and ask WTF?! was he doing there. With the 50 MPH winds being regular and the temperatures under 50°, I can see why. I'm sure it is a great place but definitely not a place I'll be booking my Christmas anytime soon.

i will do what i can to not do bad things to my floor

I can't for the life of me find a chair mat for my new office. I don't want to scratch up the new wood floor with my rolly chair but nobody seems to have them in stock. If I knew it'd take this long, I'd have used that interweb thing.

bourbon flight

What should one drink at a place that specializes in beer? Why, how about a flight of bourbon? It was a flight of four of the Knob Creek bourbons. Of the four, I liked Basil Hayden's and then Booker's. And with all of that, I am already home.

Being home, I am able to fix this stupid pictures. I can only send pictures from the sent items of my Yahoo! email account to get them to show up here. And not from any way to access my email, only from a computer (e.g. I can't use my iPhone). Quite annoying, for sure.

dinner at perry's

I had dinner last night at Perry's Steakhouse. It is relatively new steakhouse to Austin. The had steak options ranging from your not-so standard cuts of beef that were all dry-aged. Variations existed for the ribeyes and NY Strips, plus filet mignon (I really would've like to get the Chateaubriand for two but just for me though that might've been a bit too gluttonous). I narrowed my choice to the lamb chop and pork chop, but the pork was cut tableside so I had to get that.

The chop I had was good but when you're dropping around $60 for dinner with a pre-dinner whiskey at the bar and just a glass of wine with dinner the value wasn't so great. And it was a bit too hoyty toyty for me. They have some deal for lunch that I may have to check out.

three

So I had this dream that I not only had one roommate, but three! And not the one staying with me now. It was three women and they all seemed to have moved in at the same time but I don't think they knew each other. None of the girls were in the dream but the weird thing was that I recognized within the dream that I had dreamed about this before. Or I recognized during the dream that I had had made this commitment before. But was this within a previous dream? Wacky!
