if there's a sale on food, i can't turn it down

Aces sent me an email about Pok-e-Jo's having a 30th anniversary sale: all prices to 1970 levels. So I got a sandwich with a side, two meat plates with two sides for $13. Plus they had 70¢ beer so I had a couple of those to boot. Who can turn that down? Though I think between my pizza for breakfast and this, I've gained like 5 pounds today.

Basically just picked up veggies and beer.  Grand total: $86! Partying like a rock star ain't cheap.

house after rain

Been raining like crazy since about 9:30 this morning and somehow my lawn guys managed to cut and clean up before it hit.  I think those guys need to put out the weather, they're the only ones that seem to have a clue. At least this should help out the evenness of the lawn. There are some brown spots but those coincide with where the sun basically blasts it all day. Either way, I'm all set for a couple weeks (and the party on Saturday).

the going away/birthday party

The party house This kid could be my son. He even makes deliveries

Here are some of the tamer pictures from the weeked. The first of the party house and two of who could be my son. I mean, he's pumping a keg and running out beers to folks.

And now we're walking to the local bars. A good turnout considering many of these folks had been drinking since before 2 PM and this shot was past 8.

gyroscope thing in houston

I don't know if this thing is really a gyroscope, maybe it is a pendulum, but it sure was annoying. It supposedly knocks down all of those stones every two days.

they're keeping it old school

I guess they never decided to update the exterior of this Sears. It's totally retro now, but I'm sure they had to fight to keep it like that for during the 60s & 70s. Off to the museum!

tai chai's place

I'm killing time on a call taking some shots of Tai Chi's townhouse.  In stifling heat, I might add.  This place might be hotter than my house. I'm sticking to this leather couch and might've already drank a gallon of water. I'm pretty sure it is hotter in here than the 82° outside. Anyways, the low-light picture taking ability of the 3GS isn't any better than the previous incarnation but that's to be expected without a flash (I opened up the blinds to get some light in to get it this lit up). So, I better get back to listening to this call; I'm just hoping I don't pass out before I have to talk.

houston saucer

Just got back from the Houston Flying Saucer OK, I'll get the good news out of the way: there are nearly 110 beers I haven't had (out of the 387 I have had in Austin). That's good because I had only bottles remaining in Austin but here in Houston I was able to get a Fire Sale (for anybody not in the Saucer world, this is a draft beer for $2.75 which is a rarity for me). As for the bad, it isn't in the best part of town so we got so see homeless/drunk guys almost get into fights, sit on a fence and show ass crack, and ask for change, all while sitting and enjoying our beers on the patio! Oh, and the service is HORRIBLE, so bad I can't really see going more than two or three more times this weekend.

I had to stop

I couldn't not stop at Carl's Jr. on my way to Houston.  A new location in Bastrop I had to hit on my way to Houston. I'm per my normal pattern an hour or so behind schedule but at least the temperature is bearable.

maintaining my lawn in the atx

Today's supposed to get to 105° today and it is already 87°.  Good times.  I watered the lawn for like 30 plus minutes and it's already soaked in.  Though, in the lawn's defense, I did water it nearly three hours ago. We all get thirsty in the heat.

Labels:

oh, joy

Nothing better than waking up before 5 and realizing there are things you can do (especially as a home owner). Thursday and Sunday are the days I can water my lawn so I figured I'd knock that out this morning (since I'll be in Houston this weekend visiting Tai Chi). I should take pictures of that lawn and see how it looks later in the summer...

Anyways, I should try to get another hour or sleep before I do the rest of my preparations for my Space City trip. I'll be checking out a couple Tigers games (Friday and maybe Sunday), the Terra Cotta Warrior Exhibit, and maybe the Flying Saucer of Houston. I think that just killed 15 minutes of my sleep...

american gangster

Another movie knocked out, this time American Gangster. I have been interested in seeing this Denzel Washington/Russell Crowe crime drama since it came out in 2007 but it definitely didn't fit my "too long for the movie theater" criteria so I waited until now to track it down on DVD (and then let it sit for six months, almost all of that literally, in the DVD player). I watched the extended version and really liked it. There was the now Hollywood-normal technique of trying to make the villain and good guy more resemble each other so we question both sides of the issue, but both of these guys have the acting chops to actually make that work. The story was compelling and kept me interested for the nearly three hour picture.

sunday non-bloody sunday

The day blended into night about the way one would think when I was asked to sit outside (the heat had lessened and I had a few less articles of clothing (on)from caring). Meaningful conversation was had, at least on my part, between big hits of beer. And then a tray of deviled eggs magically appeared (there is little in this world that I stop a train for and one of them is deviled eggs). I ate probably a dozen (they were exquisite, some fancy recipe that I can only hope to someday acquire) plus there might've been an over-stuffed spinach quiche but don't quote me on those (ok, overstuffed and GOOD). Either way, I'm home and hoping nothing else hits me in the head between now and Thursday.

the international

A pretty decent thriller was just completed by me, The International. Clive Owen starred and I get more of an appreciation for him with each of his films. And Naomi Watts, the poor man's version of Nicole Kidman. Maybe this woman's a decent actress but every time I see her, I think she's in a role that Kidman turned down. Though my sample set is based upon next to no evidence, I'm sticking with it. Either way, I liked it up until the anticlimactic end. Maybe it was a bit too overcomplicated for its own good? Oh, and that gun fight see in the Guggenheim Museum was too hyped up, it wasn't as great as the build up.

get smart, dear god i can't believe i watched this

I love Steve Carell but can't believe I loved him enough to sit through Get Smart. I had a feeling it wouldn't be good but I didn't let that stop me. I figured I could put it on in the background when I was working or listening to something else. Well, the fat jokes and uninspired story drew me in like bees to honey. I feel so dirty now. Especially after the worthless Anne Hathaway's almost negative contribution. Goodness gracious I can't stand her. Oh, and they had some throwaway cameo by Bill Murray that was forced and unnecessary (isn't that what forced means?). Anyways, it wasn't good.

kill me, please

Man, these guys disgust me. I can't imagine ever getting involved with somebody to such an extent that I'd feel like it was ok to dress with the same shirt. Relationships aren't like being on a sport's teams. Fools, damn fools, I say! And their stupidity is disturbing my cooking class (Food & Wine from Italy) down at Central Market. But there's pasta, soup and more lamb on the menu so I might be able to survive.

taken, with liam neeson

Well, the movies on the DVR are caught up so now I'm going old school and watching DVDs. Tonight was Taken which I think my be the perfect example of a movie worthy of seeing, just not at the theater. Liam Neeson's character (which I can't remember, probably because it doesn't matter) is out to find his daughter. She's not missing at the mall and he's not some bungling fool. Ex-CIA bad ass. Fill in lots of fight scenes, some decent drama (Neeson is a great actor, after all), a twist or two and you've got yourself a good time.

riding the waves

This probably isn't the best way to use one's camera phone but I figured I was missing pics from the in-the-water-perspective. I think I'll need to do this more often, like every day going forward. Not a bad way to kill an hour or two during the week. Maybe this will be the year I get a tan?

maybe it is true?

So I had a dream that the Pilots and I were out at Union Park along with a few other folks when a girl I used to date came by. She was along with her mother and they left after a small conversation. Then Mr Pilot said something like "good thing you got rid of her because her mother didn't age so well." That's totally something he would say.

Speaking of the Pilots, I need to get ready because they're picking me up for brunch at Z Tejas. I guess hitting seven bars last night wasn't enough for any of us.

the hangover

Holy shit, was The Hangover hilarious. I hadn't read much about it and only had the trailers to go on so was surprised that Bradley Cooper played the asshole. He's usually such a good guy but he pulled it off and then some. Ed Helsm was awesome. The story was funny and (somewhat) realistic. It was like what I'd like to think my Vegas times are really like. Go see this movie!

Now I need to get ready for the rest of the night. Heading out on a bit of a pub crawl with some folks. Starting off at the new wine bar, Max's Wine Dive then wandering around east 6th Street to some places before hitting Red River and eventually ending up at Club Deville.

more than full

Just got back from a cook class at Central Market, Burgers and Beers, and I'm chock full. Jesus, did they give us a lot of food. Six different burgers accompanied by six different beers. I didn't drink the last two beers nor did I finish the last two burgers (the first part is the most shocking part, in my opinion). I haven't had a class with that much food in years, and, frankly, I hadn't missed it. All the burgers were good, but it is tough to differentiate after the third or fourth.

pool suppplies

No, those aren't brightly colored body bags, they are deflated flotation devices for the pool. The key to any successful pool is the items floating in said pool.  I've got to get an air compressor but then I'll be good to go to have these thing floating.  Also, wireless speakers have been ordered (scheduled to arrive on Friday) so they'll be music outside so it won't be too quiet any more.

Up, in 3D

Just got back from Alamo Drafthouse checking out Up with MECA and that movie is fantastic. It started off pretty darn sad and I was about to stalling balling right about the time the mood turned more upbeat. The storyline is exceptional for any type of movie and I just loved it. The animation, especially in 3D, was amazing; I just can't believe how far things have come. It is a definite must-see.
