Blooming nice, right before some rain. I'm not sure if this is normal before rain but I've only seen it once before this year. Maybe it only blooms when it gets some rain?

9/1 lawn

Its been a while (I feel like I'm starting off a
Staind song), but here's the lawn as of this morning. Seeing that 100° virtually every day and only rained maybe twice, I think it did fine. I should show the back lawn, though the point of comparison wouldn't be there. But that helps that I accidentally watered it all day one day last week.

lawn on 8/1

Pretty hot around here still (like 40 plus days of 100° plus so far this year), but I think the lawn is doing sort of fine. Getting up early is getting old on Thursdays and Sundays but I'm transitioning into an old man quite well.

Holy shit, it is hot outside and my lawn guys JUST showed up. 102° and only getting hotter so I figured a care package of beers and other lesser drinks would be worth the effort.

07/14 front lawn

Getting some brown spots even though I'm watering on my two days a week. Maybe 100° plus a day does dry things out? Oh, and that second photo are my transplanted irises. I've been watering those, too, but still none of the natural stuff in a while.

So far, at least. Though I don't know if they were liable to die while moving them from the backyard to the front, but who knows? I'm not sure if they'll survive but there are now two rows of eight giving the front of the house some company.

house after rain

Been raining like crazy since about 9:30 this morning and somehow my lawn guys managed to cut and clean up before it hit. I think those guys need to put out the weather, they're the only ones that seem to have a clue. At least this should help out the evenness of the lawn. There are some brown spots but those coincide with where the sun basically blasts it all day. Either way, I'm all set for a couple weeks (and the party on Saturday).

maintaining my lawn in the atx

Today's supposed to get to 105° today and it is already 87°. Good times. I watered the lawn for like 30 plus minutes and it's already soaked in. Though, in the lawn's defense, I did water it nearly three hours ago. We all get thirsty in the heat.

oh, joy
Nothing better than waking up before 5 and realizing there are things you can do (especially as a home owner). Thursday and Sunday are the days I can water my lawn so I figured I'd knock that out this morning (since I'll be in Houston this weekend visiting Tai Chi). I should take pictures of that lawn and see how it looks later in the summer...
Anyways, I should try to get another hour or sleep before I do the rest of my preparations for my
Space City trip. I'll be checking out a couple Tigers games (Friday and maybe Sunday), the
Terra Cotta Warrior Exhibit, and maybe the
Flying Saucer of Houston. I think that just killed 15 minutes of my sleep...

No, those aren't brightly colored body bags, they are deflated flotation devices for the pool. The key to any successful pool is the items floating in said pool. I've got to get an air compressor but then I'll be good to go to have these thing floating. Also, wireless speakers have been ordered (scheduled to arrive on Friday) so they'll be music outside so it won't be too quiet any more.

No matter how many times I dig these out, these plants keep coming back every year. Maybe they're onions? Never seen them flowering before so maybe they're evolving. All I know is that it impacts the view of my

The office has been settled. I put up

back to normal
I slept in, had a bagel, then moved to the couch. Then I started back on getting caught up on the dvr (I can't believe how many episodes of
Molto Mario,
Fringe and other assorted, unnamed shit I've got to sift through). That was several hours ago and almost forgot Florida State was playing their bowl game today (against Wisconsin in the

I woke up around 4:30 and could not fall back to sleep. I tried to fall back asleep, but ended up doing some prepping for the trip. This is the work on the pool. You can't tell really unless you've seen it before but the sand in filter has been changed, all the piping moved around, the pump raised and the filter has been moved slightly. It seems minor, but actually being able to get at the equipment is pretty good. I can always tell people what I did the weekend before I went to Europe, anyway.

Oh, and the water looks less green (though you can't really tell by this picture in comparison to the one from a few days ago). The color at this time of the year has never been close to blue; that's the important thing. Now, if I can just keep it this way for the entire year.

This is why I tend to not do anything around my house: I got DSL a few months ago and this necessitated me moving my desk closer to the other side of the wall. But was woke up this morning a bit around 7 am by the sounds of a flatbed truck next store. I assume they were doing some brick work in their back yard, but upon further analysis I found out they're getting a new roof, too! I'm a trend setter. The first roof trend setter ever!

So I'm interested in getting some new (read: any) lounging furniture for the pool. Well, me and Chilly checked out this place yesterday. Turns out the ones one sale matched the chair set Seerwah gave me some time ago, just a different color. Slight problem: the computer was out of commission. I gave my number and the lady called me earlier today to say their warehouse didn't have any.
Well, you know me, I have no faith in people so I decided to hit another location (funny, actually, me and Chilly hit a store farther away than necessary). And guess what? Their warehouse had two chaise lounges in green. Shocking. So I'll have something nice to lay on after leaving my pool this weekend. After a long strectch, my not-buying-anything-from-Best-Buy streak is over! I had to buy Tiger Woods 2005 for my brother's hard work in the back yard. Pictures to come, but the place now looks like Sanford and Son.

With a bit of moving around, the new wine rack and coffee table are in my family room. I'll need to take some better pictures with JMVC's camera, but you get the point. |

Not only does the lawn look great, but my brother's going to load some of the other unsightly shit from my back yard into JMVC's truck and haul it the hell out of here. Kids will be able to roam my back yard and not need to worry about eating stray nails.
Today's assignment: try to work on my bathroom with the Pistons' game on all the while frying up some chicken. They are conveniently playing dead center in the middle of the day, the bathroom needs to be done within a couple weeks, and I'm dying to make this fried chicken recipe. So many distractions.

Some people just go home when they leave the office early, maybe go grab a beer. I probably should've done that instead of buying some more furniture at this place
Rustic Rooms at 620 and 2222. This place had tons of stuff and there was this great 20-30% off sale. I got a new coffee table and wine rack. That's me, almost single handedly keeping the economy of the ATX alive and thriving. Hopefully this stuff can fit in my brother's van.

Even in late fall with chowder cooking, I still have issues with my pool. The pool guy just left and I had the pump replaced for my
Polaris, so the pool is ready for anyone wanting to take a 50° swim. Oh, and the pool guy said he's seen more leaves in my pool than any pool he's ever seen. And the guy's been doing this sort of thing for nearly 30 years. I am most impressive with this house stuff.

My next-store neighbor came over and helped me put in a new dead bolt on my front door. He had the right tools and such to get things done (good thing because I had none of them). We had a few beers between the work. Man, he did not like the guy who owned my house. He was looking forward to retiring early just to make his life miserable. Now that's what I call commitment!

I'm back from the weekend up north. I thought I got a decent amount of sleep, but I'm still exhausted.
And to make matters worse my pool is green. It's like St. Patrick's Day in my back yard.

I've got a band of Mexicans cutting back my trees. If only I knew some Spanish I could have them take that crappy firewood from my back yard, too.

I worked in the backyard and took a swim. The water's now crystal clear.
While working in the yard, my brother painted my room. Not totally done yet, but it looks real nice.

It's been a wonderful evening of cleaning silt out of my new Polaris.

If the new filter's taught me one thing it is that the Polaris for the pool is a piece of shit. That crafty old dodger had this thing kept together with a hope, prayer, and a healthy supply of duck tape, so it's getting replaced. Ring that cash register!

So my filtration system on my pool is shot, my Polaris is antiquated, and my pump's about had it. All told, about $2k in work needed. FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK. This not the American dream I signed up for.

With all the crap that was in my storage locker, it's amazing what wasn't there: not much worth a damn to sit on. I have S. Money's "loaner"
papasan chair, but nary a thing past that. So I've spent the past couple of days shopping for stuff and I've learned one thing: furniture is not cheap (I feel pretty smart using two colons in the same paragraph, btw). I did end up with a new sofa, coffee table, dining room table, and chairs. That'll be good for a couple of months.
And if that wasn't bad enough, my folks and I headed from shopping to Shady Grove where mom & dad got a second wind. I need to hire somebody to do all of this stuff for me.

So I had to run to Chilly's place this morning to sit on his porch to access my work email. While driving there, my car starting chugging (never a good sign). When at Chilly's, I realized I didn't have my VPN token. So I sent my status report and then headed home to find a dozen workers in my yard before heading out to get my car worked on. Along the way, I drop my brother off at the rental car place (where one of the workers was a girl from a town in Taylor, Michigan!). Then I got to wait for an hour at the dealership before they sent me to the rental place for a loaner. On the way to work, I get a call from my dad about wanting to have the workers pull a shrub from the front yard. Work's turning into my sanctuary. And I'll probably get fired from here for spending my time blogging. C'est la vie, bitches!

I think my brother's worked his way back out of my doghouse. He did some crazy shrub work and fence removal in my back yard. It's like a miracle.
