world's best dad
Just finished off
World's Greatest Dad that had me, almost lost me, pulled me back in, then nearly lost me again, but not enough for me recommend against see it (e.g. check it out!). Definitely a
black comedy with a couple turns in there to keep it interesting. Robin Williams doesn't play a characaterizatoin of himself and gives what could be his best performance since
Good Will Hunting. The movie's centers on Lance Clayton (Williams) and his tangled relationship with his misfit son, Kyle (Daryl Sabara). And I think misfit is a complement. Anyways, the parts that couldn've been predictable turned out to not be. There's a couple points toward the end that may have been better off changed but I liked it.
Oh, this was another of those movies previewed on cable before heading to the theater which is pretty, pretty cool.

the house bunny
I had a bit of time to kill today so checked out the very entertaining
Anna Farris comedy,
The House Bunny. Which is kind of funny considering some news came out about
her getting married. Anyways, it was an excellent showcase for Farris along with another good performances by Emma Stone. I might have to get the DVD for future viewing.

birthday fun
Some people would take their birthday off if it was on a Monday, but not me. I split up the day with some work, watched a couple movies and basically just lounged around doing nothing just wonderfully. First up, I started watching
The Cable Guy as it was mentioned on a recent episode of
At the Movies and I then conveniently saw it was on cable. I remembered this movie being funny, but it definitely was funnier than I remembered. Back in the day, I actually didn't like Jim Carrey, but I was totally wrong. Totally worth another look-see.
After my wonderful dinner of a grilled ham and bacon with three types of cheese sandwich, followed by a bowl of ice cream with some
Border Biscuits I decided to check out
Shoot 'Em Up. emjey saw it on the DVR and remarked that I he didn't think I'd like it. Well, I can't believe it, but I did. Unlike the
awful G.I. Joe, I had no preconceived notions and zero expectations. It was overly violent, unrealistic, and pretty stupid. But purely enjoyable in a guilty pleasure sort of way. And I then wrapped it all up with a nice root beer float. Birthday done!

more john cusack
How to kill a Sunday afternoon? By catching up on stuff on my DVR, of course. I taped some stuff while I was gone and
1408 was sitting there waiting for me. I'm not a fan of the horror genre, in genre, but I make certain exceptions for
Steven King flicks. Add to that, my boy
John Cusack and we have a weiner. There wasn't some deep answers, just a nice blend of story and good acting coupled with briefness.

Oh, and I discovered these wonderful cookies from
Border Biscuits. I didn't realize they were a Scottish company or I wouldn't have waited until tonight to try them out. I had the butterscotch crunch but am thinking all the flavors will be equally wonderful. Try them with some ice cream or with milk! Or just by themselves, they are just too wonderful for words.

a real unamerican hero
I came down to Houston for the weekend and just came back from checking out
GI Joe with Tai Chi. Boy, was this not good. I tried to temper my expectations because it didn't look good but it was much worse than I could have possibly imagined. Let's see, where to start? Oh, the story was ridiculous, the special effects horrible, acting nonexistent, and the personification of the GI Joe characters was bastardized. I mean they've got foreign guys in GI Joe? GI Joe, the Real AMERICAN Hero? WTF?! And the bases were so preposterous it was a slap to the face of anyone who called themselves a fan of GI Joe. I mean, a four level base including a water tank the size of a large city block underground in Egypt? I should've known better as there has to be some rule that any movie title that alludes to future movies just assuming the first one will succeed. But whoever was that redhead was pretty hot. That's something.

I started watching
Sin City but couldn't get through about a quarter of it (if that) before deciding on tossing in an old favorite,
High Fidelity. John Cusack, as is usual, was awesome in another romantic comedy that doesn't blow. I should look into the book as I hear it was based in London and not Chicago but that would involve some reading.

shaun of the dead!
So I did the Simon Pegg double feature but was too tired to review it last night, but
Shaun of the Dead was pretty darn entertaining horror/comedy flick. I may be dense, but I wasn't sure where they were going at certain spots so that kept it fresh. Some reading after the fact told me I missed references to a bunch of movies including
Star Wars. That and we have a
Lucy Davis sighting!

one and a half movies finishing up one
Just finished up
Run Fatboy Run off the DVR and we have another successful movie choice (maybe I have emjey to thank since he convinced me NOT to watch the latest
X-Files movie, but I hit the delete button once I realized one of my truly least favorite actors, Amanda Peet, was in it). Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age but this romantic comedy was all right in my book (I'm hoping its because it was more 'comedy' than 'romantic'). Even though the storyline was still pretty predictable, I liked the main characters enough to offset that.
And speaking of romantic comedies (and actors I hate), I had
My Best Friend's Girl queued up in the DVD player so figured I'd finish it off. Those actors don't need to be named but I've never liked them and owe it definitely to emjey (and to a lesser extend, Winston) to give it a shot. I wouldn't say I liked it, but it had its moments. Some funny moments make it a maybe on 'worth watching' list. Definitely played Kate Hudson as smart as she probably is in real life.
All I know is I'm sort of jonesing to check out
Shaun of the Dead now. Maybe I'll make it a two
Simon Pegg night? Both neolefty and emjey can't believe I've never seen it.

american gangster
Another movie knocked out, this time
American Gangster. I have been interested in seeing this Denzel Washington/Russell Crowe crime drama since it came out in 2007 but it definitely didn't fit my "too long for the movie theater" criteria so I waited until now to track it down on DVD (and then let it sit for six months, almost all of that literally, in the DVD player). I watched the extended version and really liked it. There was the now Hollywood-normal technique of trying to make the villain and good guy more resemble each other so we question both sides of the issue, but both of these guys have the acting chops to actually make that work. The story was compelling and kept me interested for the nearly three hour picture.

the international
A pretty decent thriller was just completed by me,
The International.
Clive Owen starred and I get more of an appreciation for him with each of his films. And Naomi Watts, the poor man's version of Nicole Kidman. Maybe this woman's a decent actress but every time I see her, I think she's in a role that Kidman turned down. Though my sample set is based upon next to no evidence, I'm sticking with it. Either way, I liked it up until the anticlimactic end. Maybe it was a bit too overcomplicated for its own good? Oh, and that gun fight see in the
Guggenheim Museum was too hyped up, it wasn't as great as the build up.

get smart, dear god i can't believe i watched this
I love Steve Carell but can't believe I loved him enough to sit through
Get Smart. I had a feeling it wouldn't be good but I didn't let that stop me. I figured I could put it on in the background when I was working or listening to something else. Well, the fat jokes and uninspired story drew me in like bees to honey. I feel so dirty now. Especially after the worthless Anne Hathaway's almost negative contribution. Goodness gracious I can't stand her. Oh, and they had some throwaway cameo by Bill Murray that was forced and unnecessary (isn't that what forced means?). Anyways, it wasn't good.

taken, with liam neeson
Well, the movies on the DVR are caught up so now I'm going old school and watching DVDs. Tonight was
Taken which I think my be the perfect example of a movie worthy of seeing, just not at the theater. Liam Neeson's character (which I can't remember, probably because it doesn't matter) is out to find his daughter. She's not missing at the mall and he's not some bungling fool. Ex-CIA bad ass. Fill in lots of fight scenes, some decent drama (Neeson is a great actor, after all), a twist or two and you've got yourself a good time.

the hangover
Holy shit, was
The Hangover hilarious. I hadn't read much about it and only had the trailers to go on so was surprised that Bradley Cooper played the asshole. He's usually such a good guy but he pulled it off and then some. Ed Helsm was awesome. The story was funny and (somewhat) realistic. It was like what I'd like to think my Vegas times are really like. Go see this movie!
Now I need to get ready for the rest of the night. Heading out on a bit of a pub crawl with some folks. Starting off at the new wine bar,
Max's Wine Dive then wandering around east 6th Street to some places before hitting Red River and eventually ending up at
Club Deville.

Up, in 3D
Just got back from
Alamo Drafthouse checking out
Up with MECA and that movie is fantastic. It started off pretty darn sad and I was about to stalling balling right about the time the mood turned more upbeat. The storyline is exceptional for any type of movie and I just loved it. The animation, especially in 3D, was amazing; I just can't believe how far things have come. It is a definite must-see.

annie hall
Part of killing the DVR of
HDNet Movies continued with Annie Hall. They have a lot of 'so called' classics and I've been sifting through them the past few months. Given my current state, maybe this was the wrong time to watch this movie because it sure doesn't seem so good. It was like an older, unfunny Jerry Seinfeld. Though I did like the revisionist history part of their breakup towards the end.

steadying myself for terminator salvation

Just got out of running some errands after checking out
Terminator Salvation with emjey. I like how it was filmed. And even more, I like having a flask of Maker's Mark to mix with my frozen coke/cherry coke swirl. Seriously, Christian Bale was great but (maybe) even better Sam Worthington. I don't know how much this will make at the box office or if they'll be another one of these movies, but I'd like to see more of McG's Terminator world.

star trek is pretty darn good
Just got back from the midnight IMAX showing of
Star Trek at the
Bob Bullock Museum. I liked the story and the acting wasn't bad (though the guy playing Bones was a bit overdoing it). It definitely didn't need an IMAX viewing because there weren't any special scenes but a good use of a couple hours. Only problem is that it gets a bit worse after you think about it, but it was fine for those couple of hours.

juno
neolefty watched it last year and gave it a thumbs up but it took until now for me to check it out. I liked it, though Ellen Page's Juno was a bit annoying to start off with (I think tried to make her overly abrasive but it faded). Michael Cera in anything has got to be good so I'm sure that didn't hurt.

movies to death
A nice day of sleeping off the fun of the
Saucer's 1st Anniversary party followed playoff football and then a nap readied me for countless hours of television. emjey had recommended
Sweeney Todd but just could not get through the first 5 or 10 minutes.
I then turned my attention to watching
In Bruges. I thought I read 'dark comedy' somewhere and if 'dark' means I'm left depressed then it hit the mark. Killing Bruge off the dvr left me time to watch the first hour of
24 (I will leave judgment of that for another day...) uninterupted by pesky commercials.
All the sleep left me sleepless so I then took on
Syriana. Now if one is trying to get something uplifting after a dark comedy, looking into the light of Syriana isn't the way to go. I wouldn't say it was bad, but just very depressing. I think I'll finally head to bed.

solace for who?
I snuck out of work (work being my living room) to go see
Quantum of Solace before it headed out of the theater. With only one showing I assumed this was my last chance so I took it. As it was before 5, the show was considered a matinée. Funny when I was told it was seven bucks. Then add in a small
frozen coke and I'm into the James Bond for
twelve dollars. Hell, if I had waited for six months I could have bought it for about that price.
As for the movie, I liked it. It was not nearly as good as the last one, but I am growing used to the gritty James Bond. Small things like Bond going walking through an complex with laundry hanging would just never happen in the older Bond films. The
Bourne-esque camera shots do get a bit to claustrophobic but they kept the action coming and limited excessive dialogue. I could have done without the slight references to current world dilemnas and the Bond girls should've been hotter, but it definitely killed some time. Maybe not worth twelve bucks, but not all that bad.

war by chuck
Another movie up, another down. I killed
Charlie Wilson's War last night. I know there was the typical Hollywood propaganda tossed in there and I know Charlie Wilson didn't single-handedly defeat the Communists (was Reagan's name even mentioned even once?) but it gave a was a great snapshot of how it was in the
Cold War in the 80s. Plus, I can't recall Tom Hanks being bad in any movie so there was little chance of this movie stinking. Add in a bunch of (smart) hotties, Philip Seymour Hoffman and you have a winner.
Now I need a nap. I got up for a 7:30 am call and there isn't anything on the docket until 3 pm.

good night
I figure I have pretty much every movie channel imaginable that I might as well start taping movies I have wanted to tape. First up was
Good Night, and Good Luck. This movie about
Edward R. Murrow's battle with red hater (and chaser)
Joe McCarthy was a good look at television in the 1950's and the battles that CBS had against the government, but I didn't think it all came together.
David Strathairn's portrayal of Murrow was great (and who can't like somebody smoking constantly on tv!) but I didn't really feel like deserved my empathy. Maybe if they had had somebody portray McCarthy so he'd seem like more of an asshole? I had always thought this showdown was the important part in getting McCarthy's
censure but this movie makes me think it it was just a small bit. Though I appreciate it being in black and white and short (roughly an hour and a half), I'd say it is just blah overall.

tradition
A Christmas Story is on TBS! I can't remember not watching this on Christmas. Though it is more accurately Christmas Eve. Perfect timing, too, as I'm still recovering from stuffing myself with the dinner of ribs, baked potatoes, and veggies. Not the normal holiday dinner but damn good.
Speaking of traditions, I need to get my second wind before we start playing cards.

I just finished
Point of No Return off the DVR and that movie ain't good. Not good t'all. I had heard decent things but Bridget Fonda isn't believable as a human being let alone the druggie-turned-into-a-killer. It did remind me of how good

I was at the office until nearly seven when I got a call from JMVC. He and Pot Roast were at Antonio's on Jollyville Rd so I headed out to meet up with those guys. I ran into some friends of Winston before we headed up to Little Woodrow's where JMVC and Pot Roast ran into some old friends. Then we went down to Lala's where I ran into a friend from work. I realized once again that I am no good at foosball. Pot Roast then left me and JMVC. Some people might think it wise to go home, but not us! We continued on to Poodle Dog where we not only closed the bar, but we were almost closed in the bar (we were just sitting in the corner by the pool tables and the place cleared out, but JMVC and I decided to see how long it would be before they kicked us out. It was nearly 2:45 am).
And my day was going to be spent working on the book or doing something of value, but that's not going to happen. Me and JMVC might check out Casino Royale.

I spread out watching
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly over the night and I should've spread it over a side of mayo because that thing needed something to make it palatable. Granted Lee Van Cleef was in it, but still. Not only was it historically flawed (though with Italians making cowboys movies, I should take it all with a grain of salt) but it was overlong to the extreme. I mean, over two and a half hours? Jebus, please kill me. Oh, he already tried...
Seriously, I could put up with almost all of that if it wasn't so bad. Just crappy.

So this
Cast Away has me thinking. It was on tonight on ABC and it was the first time I had seen a majority of it (even I couldn't sit through the whole thing). Anyway, I don't know about you, but one of the first questions I'd be asking Helen Hunt is how long it took for her to shack up and get knocked up by the new guy. Depending on the amount of time would determine whether or not to be pissed off. If it was at least a year or two (Tom Hanks' character was gone for 4 years), I'd be inclined to let her off. Anything less would be trouble.
Also, does anyone else feel old when you realize this movie came out in 2000?

Sunday, February 12, 2006
Well, things didn't go so well Friday night. After the party, a bunch of us headed downtown (Mac, 420, Patches, incognegro, Winston, Flashman, among others) and a good time was had by all. Winston had agreed to drive me and incognegro back to my place. That's where the fun started.
We left the bar and were heading up Red River when I stepped off a curb wrong. The rest of the experience really felt as if I was looking up from the ground. I saw myself falling face first towards the concrete, but not before some glass broke in my path. The small pieces of glass look huge from the ground and my body looks like a tree being cut to the ground. My body is surprisingly limp except my right arm which is desperately trying to brace the fall though this will do no good.
My next angle is behind the right side of my face as it impacts the shards of glass, viscously breaking my fall before the concrete.
The rest of the next few hours are a blur: me actually realizing I needed to go to the hospital; the look on the cop when he first saw my bloody cut face; the medic in the back of the ambulance saying to remain calm and me responding that I had no other choice; the flurry of activity as I was pulled into the emergency room when I asked for them to spare my shirt, coughing out blood while saying it was from Brazil; somebody mentioning how much glass had been in my face; me verifying that I would be able to go to Sealy's wedding Saturday night.
Some were a bit more vivid, like when the second doctor couldn't close the cut on my neck and me coming back to myself. Questioning something I've taken for granted my entire life. I've never said the words before and hope to never again: am I going to die?
The answer was an obvious one for them and I know why. I needed to know I was going to live even if it was a lie. In death, that would've been the greatest lie ever. In life, it seems almost matter-of-fact.
The total damage was 30 stitches. I've got a cut from the right eye to my mouth and two on my chin. Though I did learn after the fact that the carotid artery was cut, it definitely could've been a lot worse.
incognegro came back to hang out after the work was done. I quickly got back to my flippant style of things and had him take some pictures of the mayhem that once were my internal liquids. We got back to my place around 7 am Saturday and I slept like the dead. Funny, I didn't find out until I woke up that I should've been woken up every few hours in case of a more serious concussion.
I was woken up by a knocking on the front door. I got up, but only barely. I can only imagine what Patches was thinking when he saw me approaching the back door of the house. Me, wrapped up like a mummy with bloody gauze.
It was around 1:30 and I decided to stay up. I woke up the house guest and we sat around most of the day. It was obvious I was in no condition to go to Sealy's wedding so incognegro headed out without me. The Saw came back later in the day and picked up some of my medication.
The rest of the day was uneventful, though I called up some people to let them know. I was thinking of not doing anything, but it's kind of tough to hide the damage the glass and concrete do to a face (that could be a fortune cookie).
I took incognegro back to the airport a bit earlier today after successfully doing nothing of consequence (though I did get him to watch the classic
Time Bandits).
I think I'll be looking forward to boring weekends from now on.

I think I've slept too much the past couple days because I decided to toss
Sideways in around 1 am (very good movie, btw). After that, I threw on iTunes and started cleaning up my office while going back and forth between closets. I figured I'd try to pull all my dress shirts into my bedroom closet and in doing so realized more than half were pretty much garbage. I'm trying to salvage one from a stain in the kitchen right now, but the other nine are going to the Salvation Army. Next thing, I went through some short sleeve collared shirts and just couldn't believe the stuff I still had. I mean, shirts from my summer in Michigan before going to FSU so very ancient. I don't know what I was thinking keeping those for this long as I most likely can't fit in them nor are they at all near any current style (though Mrs. Bubba might say most of my shit isn't anywhere near today's style, but that's another story). Maybe its fitting that I'm going through crap on New Year's Eve. Maybe I'm doing whatever I can to extend this year, the known, to keep off 2006. As if I can prevent it without my sleep. I just know its weird being wide awake near 4 am without alcohol coursing through my blood stream. And that I should be fine with 2005 going away.

S. Money lent me this wacky book
Platform. It is a story about boredom, sex, and sex tourism with a weird, weird ending.
Anyway, I finished off a bunch of Entertainment Weekly's laying around my house and wanted to have something to read before falling asleep. I remembered there were a couple older issues that I had uncovered so I went and grabbed one of them. It was an issue from July of 2003 (in case you didn't know, I rarely throw anything out). Well, I'm in my room last night and pick up Platform from the ground behind my end table then start thumbing through EW. I look down and there is a review of
Platform.
Maybe only I find that peculiar.
And this EW is pretty decent one to flip through: there's an snippet about the prospect that Tarantino might split
Kill Bill into two movies and a review of a new show called
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. It is like history in the making, only from the past.

So I just got back from checking out The Island with JMVC and company. The movie was decent and worth a look-see, just not at the theatre. I'd wait until it came out on video. Man, I really should write a review.
But the most impressive thing about the show was my bladder. I needed to use the facilities before the movie started and for reasons unknown even to me, I put it off and off until it would've meant missing some of the movie. But that didn't stop me from having a few beers, no way. And just to show the bladder who was really boss, I waited until I was home to take that best-in-show piss. God bless my bladder!
Now let me get to that crazy Cramer guy on CNBC.

JMVC's mom somehow procured screening tickets to
The Island with my boy Ewan. I like going into a movie knowing next to nothing about it. I even got an extra ticket and Flasman's going. It'll be a good time being at the Alamo down south.

Crazy bit of time it has been. Back home in the ATX after meeting up with Yo! yesterday. Crazy thing it was as we met at the exact same time at our chosen meeting place even though we left from different places a couple of hours apart. Then we went to see
Fantastic Four, then we did the unthinkable: drinking around town (though we didn't close out the bars; that whole 7 am flight threw a wrench in that time honored tradition of getting loaded until they throw us out. Maybe this is a sign that we're maturing but I doubt it. Seriously doubt it).
In the bar hopping we did hit this great place for some grub,
Brass Ring Pub, in North Palm Beach. We had awesome service: we had a pitcher of beer at a table with a bag of ice to keep it cool, but the special thing was the bar staff changed our individual mugs to ensure we had ice cold glasses. Add on top of that the chicken sandwich I had. It was very similar to the Triple Crunch Zinger at KFC, but with better quality breading on the chicken strips. Yo! got this bleu cheese burger with the cheese inside the burger (like I had thought about doing for my party). All very good. If you're in the neighborhood, you might want to check it out. Nothing fancy looking, just great bar food.
Anyway, I left his place with about four hours sleep, barely got out of a gas station after being thought to be in the midst of some minor crime, personally willing my flights to Austin, and getting home. And then going for a three mile walk with Chilly. Of course I then took a nap so I won't be able to sleep tonight, but something's have got to stay the same.

I went out to see
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou with Bubba and I only thought it a bad idea for him to be drinking beer. Bubba's somehow been allergic to beer since he moved to Austin. Anyway, we tried to find another place to go after the movie since I was locked out of my house (that's another story) and after a failed attempt at finding one of his friends on 52nd Street, we went to Fado's where we waited for his wife. After she showed up, the real effects of the beer alergy appeared; Bubba looked like he had gone twelve rounds with Clubber Lang. Worse yet is he had to leave early so I went down for nothing. That's no fun. And his car is still in my drive way. Damn him and his puffy eyes!

I've got all these movies and no idea where half of them came from, but when you've got three days of comedies end with Monty Python and the Holy Grail you're doing something right. And I don't think I'll ever get sick of saying it (though people will get sick of hearing it) but my tv's bad ass; everything looks great on it (even the sunglasses I left on the right corner). |
Before the movie I went down and checked out Reckless Kelly at Shady Grove. It was a pretty good show, but I like pretty much any show that has a Rolling Stones' cover. Pus the show finished just in time for the rain to pour.
